How Long Does a Topper Last?

If you buy a lovely topper, you naturally want to enjoy your good night’s sleep for as long as possible. But how long does a topper last? On average, a topper lasts around 10 years. However, there is more to say about this. The exact answer depends on several factors, such as the material, the thickness, the quality and the way you care for it. In general, you can enjoy toppers made from durable, high-quality materials such as natural latex for longer. Synthetic materials like polyether or memory foam are often much cheaper, but they only last about 2 to 5 years.

When Should You Replace a Topper?

If you want to get the most out of the comfort a topper offers, it’s important to sleep on a quality topper, look after it well and replace it at the right time. When is replacing a topper really necessary? You can recognise it by these signs:

• Less comfortable
If you notice that your topper no longer feels as comfortable as it used to and you often wake up with back or neck pain, it’s time to replace your topper.
• Sagging or dips
If you see visible sagging or dips in the topper, it’s better to replace it. In that case, the topper no longer gives the right support.
• Hygiene
Your topper is no longer hygienic. Because of moisture and dust, your topper can become a breeding ground for dust mites and even mould. You may notice this through stains or if you wake up with allergy symptoms.

Should You Turn a Topper Over?

Whether you should turn your topper over depends on the type of topper. Our natural latex topper, for example, has the same structure throughout, so its position does not matter. To reduce wear, we recommend turning your topper every 3 months. This helps prevent sagging and dips and makes your topper last longer.

Some toppers, such as memory foam toppers, have a specific top and bottom side and are therefore better not turned over. We always advise you to follow the instructions from the shop where you bought your topper for advice on turning it or not.

Should You Let a Topper Rest?

Letting your topper rest is definitely a good idea. How can you do this in the best way for optimal hygiene and a long lifespan of your topper? Here are our tips for resting and maintaining your topper:

• Airing
Air your topper every morning by folding back your duvet. This helps remove moisture and keeps the material fresh.
• Ventilating
Make sure your bedroom is well ventilated and open a window after you have made your bed.
• Taking it off the bed
Regularly remove your topper from the bed to let both your topper and mattress air. For example, place the topper upright against the wall.
• Changing your bedding
Make sure your bedding is clean and washed regularly. This helps keep the topper clean and hygienic.

With these tips, you can also influence the answer to the question “how long does a topper last?” yourself. Want to treat a stain? Use an ecological stain remover. And did you know that vacuuming your topper is not a good idea? It can damage the wool layer inside.
