It feels as soft as down—but no animals are involved. The natural material kapok is one to remember. The fiber from the kapok fruit is light, airy, plant-based, and hypoallergenic. That makes kapok filling ideal for our sustainable pillows. In fact, our kapok pillows are among our best-selling pillows! We can imagine you’d like to know more about this special material. That’s why we’re answering the question “what is kapok?” along with other frequently asked questions such as “what kind of fabric is kapok?” and “what does kapok look like?”

What kind of material is kapok? Kapok is a plant-based fiber that comes from the fruit of the kapok tree. These trees can grow up to 70 meters (230 feet) tall. Kapok trees grow wild in tropical regions and provide shade for other crops. The kapok we use for our kapok pillows comes from Indonesia.
The fluffy fibers from the kapok pods are used for our pillows, but almost all other parts of the fruit are processed as well, including for the production of soda. There is virtually no waste—making it a truly sustainable material.
Kapok is sometimes called “plant down” because it feels soft and is a beautiful plant-based alternative to down. We’re often asked: “Is kapok the same as cotton?” The answer is no. While it resembles cotton and is also plant-based, kapok comes from the kapok tree—not from the cotton plant. You might also wonder: “What does kapok look like?” When you see it, you’ll immediately understand why it’s perfect for pillows. It’s fluffy, light, and incredibly soft.
We see the benefits of kapok in two ways. First, its sustainable nature. Second, the wonderful properties that make it ideal for pillows. Kapok pillows are good for you—and good for the planet. Here are some of the key benefits:
Pillows filled with kapok are known for being light and airy. In terms of firmness and resilience, a kapok pillow sits somewhere between down and wool. You can shape it, though not as easily as a down pillow. That means you can expect solid support from kapok pillows. Looking for a different firmness level? You can easily adjust it. Yumeko kapok pillows feature a zipper, allowing you to remove or add filling using our refill bag.

If you follow a vegan lifestyle, kapok is a perfect alternative to down. Unlike synthetic fibers, kapok is not derived from petroleum and is not produced through environmentally harmful processes. And unlike microplastics, kapok fiber is biodegradable. Kapok is also ideal for people with allergies, such as dust mite allergies. The fiber is naturally hypoallergenic.

Feeling inspired now that you know what kapok is and understand its benefits? Then it’s definitely worth exploring our collection of kapok pillows. You can shop online or schedule an appointment to visit our showroom and experience the pillows for yourself.
Yumeko’s kapok pillows are made in the Netherlands and are available in different sizes and firmness levels, each suited to a specific type of sleeper:
Important to know: kapok pillows cannot be washed, as washing damages the natural wax coating around the fibers.
