What Is Kapok?
What kind of material is kapok? Kapok is a plant-based fiber that comes from the fruit of the kapok tree. These trees can grow up to 70 meters (230 feet) tall. Kapok trees grow wild in tropical regions and provide shade for other crops. The kapok we use for our kapok pillows comes from Indonesia.
The fluffy fibers from the kapok pods are used for our pillows, but almost all other parts of the fruit are processed as well, including for the production of soda. There is virtually no waste—making it a truly sustainable material.
Kapok is sometimes called “plant down” because it feels soft and is a beautiful plant-based alternative to down. We’re often asked: “Is kapok the same as cotton?” The answer is no. While it resembles cotton and is also plant-based, kapok comes from the kapok tree—not from the cotton plant. You might also wonder: “What does kapok look like?” When you see it, you’ll immediately understand why it’s perfect for pillows. It’s fluffy, light, and incredibly soft.
Vegan, Sustainable, and Hypoallergenic
If you follow a vegan lifestyle, kapok is a perfect alternative to down. Unlike synthetic fibers, kapok is not derived from petroleum and is not produced through environmentally harmful processes. And unlike microplastics, kapok fiber is biodegradable. Kapok is also ideal for people with allergies, such as dust mite allergies. The fiber is naturally hypoallergenic.
