Does It Really Make a Difference: Washing at 30 or 40 Degrees?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that washing at higher temperatures is always better. In reality, the difference between washing at 30 or 40 degrees is significant—with 30 degrees being the better choice in most cases. Not only for your energy bill, but also for your textiles. Washing at 30 degrees uses around 25% less energy and helps prevent wear and pilling in your bedding, towels, and clothing. Thirty degrees is officially your new favorite wash cycle!

The Right Temperature for Different Types of Textiles

Different materials require different wash programs. By choosing the right temperature for each type of textile, you ensure your items are cleaned properly without unnecessary damage. Let’s take a look at the best approach per item.

At What Temperatuur Should U Wash Bedding

You've invested in beautiful bedding, and of course, you want to enjoy it for as long as possible. So the question is: at what temperature should you wash bedding? In most cases, washing at 30 degrees is sufficient. However, it may sometimes be necessary to wash bedding at 40 degrees. For example, in case of stubborn stains or for extra hygiene. The enzymes in your detergent work most effectively at around 40 degrees.

Which Program Should You Use to Wash Towels?

Towels require a bit of extra attention. Washing new towels before first use is essential, as it improves their absorbency. Wash new towels for the first time at 40 degrees, without fabric softener. For subsequent washes, 30 degrees is usually sufficient—unless the towels are heavily soiled. And which program should you choose? A cotton or eco program generally delivers the best results.

Tips for Smart Washing

Choosing the right temperature alone isn’t enough. Smart washing also means paying attention to several factors that together ensure the best results. With these tips, you’ll get the most out of every wash cycle:

  • Washing Frequency
Smart washing also means: don’t wash too often. By airing your textiles more frequently and putting them in the laundry basket less quickly, you significantly extend their lifespan. This is especially true for items that aren’t really dirty but just need freshening up. More wears between washes means less wear and tear—and saves water and energy too. A sustainable choice, and one we love!
  • Overloading Is a No-Go
For optimal results, proper drum loading is crucial. A good rule of thumb: there should be just enough space above your laundry to fit a fist. For delicate fabrics, such as cotton sateen bedding, it’s better to fill the drum a little less.
  • Choose an Eco Program
Smart washing doesn’t always mean washing quickly. The enzymes in detergent need time to work effectively. Although an eco program takes longer, it is gentler on your textiles and uses less energy.
  • Opt for an ecological detergent
Opt for an ecological detergent with the right enzymes, such as lipase, amylase, and protease. These enzymes work best when washing at 30 or 40 degrees. Avoid detergents that contain microplastics, palm oil, or optical brighteners. Better for your textiles—and definitely better for the planet!
