When making our duvets, we use only sustainable and natural materials – just like in the rest of our collection. And speaking of sustainability: a Yumeko duvet will last you around eight years. But how can you make sure you enjoy your wonderful duvet for its entire lifespan? The secret lies in proper care. And although you might think that washing your duvet is part of that, it actually isn’t. On average, you only need to wash your duvet once every four or five years. How should you wash your duvet when the time comes? Here are our tips!

Do you need to wash a new duvet before using it? That’s a question we often get. The answer is no! You don’t need to wash your duvet until about four or five years later. In the meantime, you can air it daily by folding it over during the day. You can also let it air outside from time to time – this helps keep it noticeably fresher!
After about four years, when it’s time to wash your duvet, it’s essential to check the care instructions carefully. Not every duvet can go into a washing machine, and you should always pay attention to the washing temperature. If you’re having your duvet dry-cleaned, make sure to check which programme suits your type of duvet. You’ll find information about the correct temperature and cleaning process on the care label. In this blog, we’ll also give you some extra explanation and tips.
Washing your down duvet is a job best left to professionals. Whether you have a down, half-down or deluxe duvet, you’ll see a circle with the letter P and a line underneath it on the care label:
Ask the dry cleaner to pay close attention to the care instructions before cleaning your duvet. The right cleaning method is closely linked to the lifespan of your duvet.

If you have a wool duvet, you own a very special item. Did you know that wool is naturally self-cleaning? The natural fat from the sheep’s fleece, called lanolin, helps wool repel dirt and bacteria. A wool duvet doesn’t actually need to be washed. If you still want to clean it, professional dry cleaning is the way to go. Just like our down duvets, you’ll see the same circle with the letter P and a line on the care label. This means it should be dry-cleaned at a low temperature, with water and the solvent perchloroethylene.
While our down and wool duvets are best taken to the dry cleaner, our TENCEL™ and linen duvets can safely be washed at home. If you’re washing your duvet in the machine, always check the care label for the correct temperature. A fun fact about our TENCEL™ duvets: they’re anti-allergenic. Bacteria and dust mites don’t like the smooth surface of the TENCEL™ fibre, which keeps them away naturally.
If you’d like to wash your Yumeko duvet, both TENCEL™ and linen duvets can be washed at home at a maximum of 40 degrees on a wool programme. Make sure the duvet fits well in the machine and use a mild, ecological detergent. Let the duvet air dry — neither material is suitable for the tumble dryer.
